Laying Random Ashlar

It is suggested that a random pattern of machine split ashlar rubble veneer should be laid with no vertical joints in the pattern to be higher than the highest course height of stone being used in the pattern. No horizontal joint to be more than three stones long.  No two stones of the same height should be placed end to end.  Care should be taken that each and every piece of stone used in the wall should be installed so it is longer than it is tall. Thus no stone should be installed on its end.

The above allows for a pleasing arrangement and somewhat even, random mix of sizes and shapes throughout the wall area.
